Of Warmth and Bones
            

Of Warmth and Bones (2019) is a series of sculptures that deal with warmth, death, and memory. As if hoping to preserve the warmth and memory of a departed body, I crocheted sheep yarn around the femur, mandibles and humerus of various animals.
            Sheep wool is at the center of my family’s hat-making tradition: it is our lifeline, the fiber connecting our memories. Weaving it is an act of remembrance, an exercise against the coldness of forgetting.

Chicago Dibs
            
            Chicago Dibs (2021) documents a sacred urban tradition invoked by drivers. Making parking space during winters implies shoveling snow from the street. To guard this spot and efforts, drivers recur to random placeholders called dibs. As extensions of body and property, dibs make a claim over public space.
            
            This series portrays 31 dibs and their transformation from winter to spring. As the snow melts, the dibs soil and are confused with trash. By spring, the signals that mark public space become muddled. 
            
            As dibs alter the functionality of objects and mix signals, I encased the photographic portraits of dibs in aluminum salad containers

			La Sagrada Maldita
            

            La Sagrada Maldita (LSM) or The Holy Damned is a collaborative project of Alejandra Gutierrez (México) and Astro Escudero (Ecuador). Through new media narratives, LSM explores the polysemy of a word that is universal, ambiguous and contradictory in itself: madre. 
            
            At once, madre is; 
            &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; origin (origen)
             &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; matter (materia)
            &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; matriarch (matriarca)
            &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; Mother Earth (Madre Tierra)
            &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; motherland (madre patria)
            &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; milk mother (madre de leche)
            &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; nun (monja)
            &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; MILF (mamacita)
             &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; motherfucker (puta madre).

			The Day of Two Suns
            
            
Acts of Erosion (2021)&#38;nbsp;is a collaboration with Justin Deschamps created at the AIR Residency in Carrizozo, New Mexico. Through performance and photography, we sketch multiple chapters about the waves of Westward Expansion frozen in the desert.&#38;nbsp;
For us, the birth of the Atomic Age is a more recent wave of Westward Expansionism, a wave of blinding, burning light. In the chapter The Day of Two Suns, we connect the nuclear history of the White Sands Missile Range and its echo in Hiroshima.
We performed rudimentary gestures evoking a detonation. Light becomes matter; matter becomes light. As a form of transfiguration, volcanic rocks cast double shadows, ash elevates into clouds, and trinitite blocks the sun. By freezing these gestures through photography, we mimic the strange temporality of the desert and suspend time.

			Four Dimensions of a Monolith
            
            
Four Dimensions of a Monolith (2019) exposes the failure of Ecuadorean History to account for femenine rape during the Spanish Conquest. 

This failure becomes apparent in a passage from my History textbook, which justifies [sexual] violence as an “attractive” transaction for indigenous women to socially advance. This monolithic narrative omits the complex and often brutal experience of colonization for indigenous women. To make this historic void apparent, the installation offers multiple dimensions of the passage. Sculptural and photographic strategies expand and invert, highlight and redact the text. Every iteration destabilizes the veracity of this narrative. 

The installation consists of four components:
Apparatus &#38;amp; Shadowbooks (two opposing tripods highlighting the passage)Corrective Lens of Page 99 (text-based installation that either redacts or reveals the passage, depending on the angle seen) Two Sentences, Bent (urethane cast of the passage expanded in space) Enmeshment (digital photogram of a resin book with hair)

			Contested Territory 
            
            
Contested Territory (2019) are two vaginal casts in resin and aluminum. Like a contested territory, the feminine body has been in dispute. To claim authorship over my own anatomy, I gave myself an orgasm and casted that negative space into a positive form.

			Blue Mattress, Blue Print
            
            
Blue Mattress, Blue Print (2018) is a collaboration with artist Paula Wilson at the Oxbow School of Art, Michigan.
            This series is based on pinturas de casta, 18th century colonial caste paintings used as blueprints for racial discourse in Latin America. The racism that they codified is still palpable in society today. Casta paintings established a racial taxonomy of the “New World,” a hierarchy in which the Spaniards and the purity of their blood became a dominant value.
            As a form of revising these paintings, we recursively performed, painted and photographed on a casta print. Through our images, the hierarchies loop on themselves. The more layers of intervention we accumulated, the more disoriented the colonial logic of this blueprint becomes.

        	History written on bedsheets
            
            
History written on bedsheets (2019) politicizes intimate affairs as History. This work centers the bed as a site where power is negotiated at its most basic level. In turn, bedsheets are the soft pages of a history book, registering the untold stories of women’s bodies. 
This series applies image-making as a haptic and sensuous process. Made in the home of Ecuadorian families, this work combines the gifted bedsheets, the frottage technique, coffee grounds and seven historic bed frames. By rubbing coffee grounds with my hands over the sheets, the pigment imprints an image of the bed frame appearing from underneath. Coffee, which desecrates the bedsheets, participates as a sculptural element in the installation of this work.
